Proverbs 21:20
The wise man saves for the future, but the foolish man spends whatever he gets. Proverbs 21:20 (TLB)
So I had this goofy brain moment as I was ruminating on this verse. I kept converting the words from the song “Aaron Burr, Sir” from the musical Hamilton. Mr. Burr provides some unsolicited advice to young Hamilton. “Talk less. Smile more. Don't let them know what you're against or what you're for.” But in my head it became “Spend less, save more. When you give, you let them know what you are for.” Weird right?.
But really, as we review today’s scripture the Mad Lib version of the lyrics kinda makes some sense. Throughout the Bible God provides us with much financial wisdom. As the creator of all God, of course, should know best. We should follow what God says about money. After all it is God’s money and we are merely stewards of God’s abundance. We should choose to be good stewards, faithful and not foolish. I have read it summarized that as Christians we should strive to be diligent earners, wise savers, and cheerful givers. 1
Below are some examples of scripture that help solidify the point and help us to make wise biblically based financial decisions.
“Remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth.” Deuteronomy 8:18 (NIV)
“Begin using your hands for honest work, and then give generously to others in need.” Ephesians 4:28 (NLT)
“His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!” Matthew 25:21-28 (NIV)
“Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds; for riches do not endure forever, and a crown is not secure for all generations.” Proverbs 27:23-24 (NIV)
Questions for Reflection:
- As you prepare for making your stewardship decisions, are there things you can do to assess your faithful versus foolish financial decisions?
- In 2021 how do you intend to let God know that you are grateful for the gifts He has bestowed upon you?
Prayer
Good and Gracious God, Thank you for the gifts you have provided each of us. Help us to make faithful and not foolish decisions regarding those gifts. Instill in us the discipline to manage these gifts by being a diligent earner, a wise saver and a generous giver. Amen
