Matthew 12:15-21

Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place. A large crowd followed him, and he healed all who were ill. He warned them not to tell others about him. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: “Here is my servant whom I have chosen, the one I love, in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations. He will not quarrel or cry out; no one will hear his voice in the streets. A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out, till he has brought justice through to victory. In his name the nations will put their hope.” Matthew 12:15-21 (NIV)

In this verse, Jesus was aware the Pharisees were conspiring together to destroy and kill Him. Their options were limited, because they could not enforce a death penalty while under Roman rule. They would need the Roman authorities to charge Jesus. The other obstacle faced by the Pharisees was that Jesus was very popular with the people. They had to be careful not to lose the people’s loyalty by acting too openly against Jesus.

At this time, Jesus moves away from the Pharisees' wrath, as He chooses to avoid further conflict. He has more work to do before His time comes to be arrested and killed by the Romans.

Jesus may have moved away from the Pharisees, but He did not escape the crowds of people that continually followed Him. Not only were the people drawn to His powerful and authoritative teaching, Jesus "healed them all." In this phase of His ministry, Jesus healed anyone who came to Him. He was fulfilling His mission of demonstrating the power of God in the form of the Messiah.

This verses underscore Jesus' mission to bring healing and justice, particularly to the Marginalized and oppressed.

In summary, Matthew 12:15-21 presents a profound insight into Jesus’ character and mission, illustrating His role as the gentle servant who fulfills God’s promise and brings hope to all humanity.

Questions for Reflection:

  • Have you ever felt others conspiring against you to do you harm? What was the situation and how did you react? Did God’s presence help?
  • Do you feel God has an interest in you personally? Why or why not?

Prayer:

Lord, help us be constantly aware of Your love and care of each of us. Keep us strong against those who seek to harm us and our beliefs. Give us the strength and will power to live and act as You desire. Give us the strength and courage to return Your love and glory. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen
