Hebrews 2:10-18

God--- the one who made all things and for whose glory all things exist---wanted many people to be his children and share his glory. So he did what he needed to do. He made perfect the one who leads those people to salvation. He made Jesus a perfect Savior through his suffering. Jesus the one who makes people holy, and those who are made holy are from the same family. So he is not ashamed to call them his brothers and sisters. He says, “God I will tell my brothers and sisters about you. Before all your people I will sing your praises.” He also says, “I will trust in God.” And he says, “I am here, and with me are the children God has given me.” These children are people with physical bodies. So Jesus himself became like them and had the same experiences they have. Jesus did this so that, by dying, he could destroy the one who has power of death---the devil. Jesus became like these people and died so that he could free them. They were like slaves all their lives because of their fear of death. Clearly, it is not angels that Jesus helps. He helps the people who are from Abraham. For this reason, Jesus had to be made like us, his brothers and sisters, in every way. He became like people so that he could be their merciful and faithful high priest in service to God. Then he could bring forgiveness for the people’s sins. And now he can help those who are tempted. He is able to help because he himself suffered and was tempted. Hebrews 2:10-18 (ERV)

Many years ago, we do not know how many, God created the heavens and the earth. Adam and Eve got us off to a bad start. As time passed, God led his people to write an instruction manual which we call the Old Testament. As believers we many times struggled understanding and living the life God desired of us.

God then went to plan B. On Christmas 2025 years ago he sent his Son Jesus to explain and show us how God wanted us to live. His Son Jesus lived on this earth 33 years showing us and telling us what was important. Maybe the most important message he left us was what he called the most important commandment, “Love God and love your neighbor.” He also reminded me that everyone is my neighbor.

The last thing he did to show how deep love can go was to die a very painful death on the cross for you and for me. He had no sin but died the painful death for my salvation. If Jesus can do that for you and I, don’t you think we should show love to our neighbor and our God.

Questions for Reflection:

  • What does love your neighbor mean to you?
  • Who is your neighbor?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, Thank you for sending your Son to show us how we should live our lives. Most of all we thank your Son for dying that painful death for our sins. We pray this prayer in your Son's name. Amen
