Isaiah 46:4
“Even to your old age I am he, even when you turn gray, I will carry you. I have made and I will bear; I will carry and will save.” Isaiah 46:4 (NRSVUE)
As a mother to young kids, this verse really strikes a chord. I completely identify with the making and the bearing of people. I carry them physically, in my body, in my arms. I carry them mentally, taking care of their wants and needs. I save them from harm and from hurt, applying band-aids, giving hugs, kisses and words of encouragement. The work of a mother is never done, the worry never stops. They are so precious to me that I would never think twice about putting their needs before my own. As a mother, wife, daughter and a sister living in the adult world, bogged down with worry and responsibility, it is easy to feel like there is no one looking out for me. This verse is a great reminder that in those moments of being worn down and weak, God is there to carry me and save me. I am never truly alone in anything.
Questions for Reflection:
- How often do you feel like you need saving?
- How often do you remember to turn to God in those moments?
Prayer:
Dear Lord,
When I am feeling drained and alone, find a way to remind me of your steadfast love. That the weight of what I am bearing is never too great for you to be able to carry me too.
Amen
