Psalm 24

The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; for he founded it on the seas and established it on the waters. Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place? The one who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not trust in an idol or swear by a false god. They will receive blessing from the Lord and vindication from God their Savior. Such is the generation of those who seek him, who seek your face, God of Jacob.  Lift up your heads, your gates; be lifted up, your ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory?  The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, your gates; lift them up, your ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is he, this King of glory?  The Lord Almighty - He is the King of glory. Psalm 24 (NIV)

Psalm 24 is a statement of God's rule, holiness, and majesty. It stirs us to seek purity and truth, honoring the King of Glory in our lives. It urges us to recognize our place within God's creation and prepare ourselves and the world around us for the arrival of the King.

The psalm opens with a declaration of God's sovereignty over all of the earth and its inhabitants, acknowledging God as the ultimate Creator.

It then considers the question of who is worthy to stand in God's holy place. The response outlines the virtues of clean hands, pure heart, and a truthful spirit; the rewards being blessings.

The psalm ends with a call to open the gates (yourself) and let the King of Glory in.

Being an enthusiast of the outdoors and natural wonders, I find pleasure and peace in God’s creations and everything in it.

As such, I personally feel Psalm 24 also tells us to honor all that God has made, the earth, the animals, and all others as precious. And as stewards awaiting His return, we need to take care of it kindly, not waste resources, and do what we can to preserve and maintain

Questions for Reflection:

  • Do you see God as the ultimate Creator of ALL?
  • Do you actively honor God's creations and preserve and maintain them?
  • How do you feel about, and take actions towards waste and misuse of His creations?

Prayer:

Lord, help us keep your world and creations as You desire. Keep us aware of how we use your resources and give us the insight and strength to preserve and maintain Your glorious world and all in it. Help us act wisely and live in a way that brings glory to Your name and Your creations. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen
