Matthew 9:35-38
Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. Matthew 9:35-38 (NIV)
In these verses, we see Jesus actively engaging in His ministry—teaching, proclaiming the good news, and healing. His actions were driven by a deep compassion as He saw the people’s struggles and helplessness. This wasn’t just a fleeting feeling; it moved Him to action.
I often find myself caught up in my own world, too busy to notice those around me. But when I pause to reflect, I realize that compassion can feel overwhelming. It stirs something deep within us. When was the last time I truly saw someone in need? How did that affect me? Jesus’ analogy of the harvest brings this urgency home for me. It reminds me that there are so many people—friends, family, even strangers—who are yearning for hope and support.
The fields are ripe for harvest, but the laborers are few. This is not just a call for someone else; it’s a call for me, for you. Each of us is invited to be part of this mission.
I remember a time when I saw a friend struggling and felt the nudge to reach out. It was a simple text, but it opened the door to a deeper conversation. That small act of compassion made a difference, not just for them but for me too. It reminded me of the joy that comes from serving others and being present.
Reflecting on this passage, I realize that compassion should lead us to action. Whether it’s sharing a kind word, lending a helping hand, or simply listening, each act matters.
