Proverbs 3:1-6
My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity. Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:1-6 (NIV)
Do you still feel the excitement of Pentecost, that fullness of the Holy Spirit? Pentecost has been celebrated, but the rest of the church season begs us to continue the joy of having the Spirit in our lives. The early church grew quickly after Pentecost, with many major cities having congregations within a few decades. Is that the level of excitement you feel, to share with anyone and everyone the good news of Easter and Pentecost?
As time goes by, excitement can wane a bit. In the passage from Proverbs for today, Solomon urges us to not forget God’s teaching, and keep love and faithfulness wrapped around you. Many good things will happen to us if we do this, and these are just a few of God’s promises. Some of us wear a cross around our neck to remind us of God’s love and faithfulness. When we constantly remind ourselves of what God has taught us, our lives will become calmer, with straighter paths, and full of trust in what God has planned for us.
As we travel through the Pentecost season this summer, remind yourself of how the Holy Spirit came to the disciples, then to the new baptized souls on that first Pentecost. Then, remember what God wants you to do with that fullness of Spirit, and be loving and faithful to all around you. You might be surprised at the amazing things that happen!
Questions for Reflection:
- What do you do to remind yourself of God’s teachings?
- How can you stay excited about being full of the Holy Spirit?
- What does being loving and faithful mean to you?
Prayer:
Dear Lord, we thank you for the Holy Spirit and your teachings which guide our way here on earth. There are so many areas of life around us that need our love, and we can be overwhelmed easily. Remind us of how powerful we can be when we let the Spirit fill us with your love for others to be examples of how you want us to live, with love and faithfulness. In Your name, Amen.
