Mark 10:42-45

So Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their authority over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them.  But among you it will be different.  Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else.  For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many. Mark 10:42-45 (NLT)

Serving, as we understand it as Christians, is a selfless act of caring for others’ needs and God’s kingdom by using our love for others rather than using a feeling of obligation to serve. I would add that serving is also a healthy choice for us!  When you serve you exercise your body, mind, and spirit. When serving, your body senses of hearing, seeing, and touching are heightened as you interact with one or more people being totally present with them.  You also use your various muscles as you get a task done. Your brain is focused on the needs of those you are helping by problem solving on how best to meet their needs. Serving others has been proven to release oxytocin, dopamine, and serotonin in your brain – which can reduce stress, increase bonding, and boost your mood. It does not matter how big or small the “service” is, it’s the act of interaction. This enhances both your mental and physical well-being. Wow – do you think Jesus knew that when teaching this lesson of service to his disciples in person and us in scripture that their and our lives would be enriched by this servant attitude?

So yes, you wonderful creations of God, get up and serve – it is so good for you!

Questions for Reflection:

  • Southwood has many opportunities to serve at church and in our community, which one can you sign up for and add to your life?
  • What small action of service of another can you add to your daily life?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father,
Help me to be more aware of others around me who might need a helping hand, a smile, or a kind word. Please guide my servant heart.  Amen
