1 John 3:1-10

Today’s scripture holds a lot! Let’s focus in on a piece of it in verses 2 & 3: “But friends, that’s exactly who we are: children of God. And that’s only the beginning. Who knows how we’ll end up! What we know is that when Christ is openly revealed, we’ll see him—and in seeing him, become like him. All of us who look forward to his coming stay ready, with the glistening purity of Jesus’ life as a model for our own.” 1 John 3:2-3 (MSG)

We are a work in progress. God isn’t finished with us yet. He’s like a sculptor who chips away at a block of marble. An observer might ask, “How do you know what to remove?” The sculptor might say, “I just take away anything that doesn’t look like the vision I have.” Isn’t this a nice visual of how God is carefully sculpting us to be more like Him?

We are already God’s children — fully, completely, right now. At the same time, we are also becoming something more – something even we can’t fully comprehend yet.

Spiritual transformation is not about striving to impress God. It’s about God patiently shaping us into the likeness of Jesus. Like a sculptor, He sees the finished work even when we don’t. We might see rough edges, but He sees the masterpiece underneath & what we will be. The more we seek Jesus — in scripture, prayer, worship, in quiet moments — the more we become like Him.

Questions for Reflection:

  • Where do you feel “unfinished”, and how might God be shaping you there?
  • What “old pieces of marble” - habits, fears, etc. - might God be gently chipping away?

Prayer:

Father, thank You for seeing me as I am and also for who I am becoming. Give me patience with the process and confidence in Your vision for my life. Amen.
