1 Kings 19:5-8
Then he lay down under the broom tree and fell asleep. Suddenly an angel touched him and said to him, “Get up and eat.” He looked, and there at his head was a cake baked on hot stones and a jar of water. He ate and drank and lay down again. The angel of the Lord came a second time, touched him, and said, “Get up and eat, or the journey will be too much for you.” He got up and ate and drank; then he went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb the mount of God. 1 Kings 19:5-8 (NRSVUE)
Have you ever seen a burnout? As in when a driver stomps on the accelerator spinning the tires until they smoke? They’re fun to watch, but can be dangerous when performed by untrained drivers. Check out the short videos below:

They’re also expensive. Burnouts heat tires to 400F, strip away exterior tread, damage the interior tire structure, and can lead to catastrophic failure.
In our verse today, Elijah is suffering physical and emotional burnout. He is fleeing for his life, chased by the soldiers of Queen Jezebel. It’s been a rough time. Elijah is frightened, exhausted, and feels like he is out of options. But God sends angels to provide food and rest. Elijah is reinvigorated to continue his journey to the safety of Mount Horeb. God saw his need and offered a solution.
In her book, No Greater Love, Mother Teresa wrote:
Do not allow yourself to be disheartened by any failure, as long as you have done your best. Neither glory in your success, but refer all to God in deepest thankfulness. If you are discouraged it is a sign of pride because it shows you trust in your own powers. Never bother about people’s opinions. Be humble and you will never be disturbed. The Lord has willed me here where I am. He will offer a solution.
Questions for Reflection:
- Do you ever feel like a tire that has just gone through a burnout – worn out, broken, and nearing your limit?
- Where does GOD want me to place my focus and energy?
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for being a gentle and compassionate Father. When I am exhausted and ready to give up, You meet me in my low places. Give me the grace to pause, to rest in Your presence, and to be nourished by Your Word so I have the strength to keep going. Amen.
