Psalm 29

“JENNA!!! Get over here now!” No words were more terrifying than those coming from my military father growing up. The General has mellowed out in his older years, but my brothers and I will forever make beds you can bounce quarters off of, execute proper pushups, and operate on military time.

As frightening as dad’s voice used to be, it can’t compare to God’s. In Psalm 29, God’s voice is powerful and majestic, but it is also destructive when needed. David uses the phrase “voice of the Lord” seven times. It’s a subtle hint to the part God’s voice played at creation. But more significantly, it relays that there is nothing on earth that doesn’t quiver and bow before the sound of it. God reigns supreme over all things in the natural world and in human hierarchies. Therefore, He is the only one who can give strength, blessings, and peace to those who worship accordingly.

Questions for Reflection:

  • Do you have a father or caregiver that had to show strength and steadfastness towards you? What was the overall outcome?
  • Do you believe God is using His powerful voice to help or frighten mankind?

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for redirecting us when needed and for reminding us that You alone deserve the glory. Help us listen to Your word so that we may reap the strength, blessings, and peace that can only come from You. Amen.
