Isaiah 7:10-16

Immanuel—God Is with Us

Then the Lord spoke to Ahaz again. The Lord said, “Ask for a sign to prove to yourself that these things are true. It may be a sign from as deep as the place where the dead are or as high as the heavens.” But Ahaz said, “I will not ask for a sign. I will not test the Lord.” Then Isaiah said, “Ahaz, descendant of David, listen very carefully! Isn’t it bad enough that you wear out the patience of people? Do you have to wear out the patience of my God also? But the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be pregnant. She will have a son, and she will name him Immanuel. He will be eating milk curds and honey when he learns to reject what is evil and to choose what is good. You are afraid of the kings of Israel and Aram now. But before the child learns what is good and what is evil, the lands of Israel and Aram will be empty. Isaiah 7:10-16 (ICB)

That’s impossible. How many times during a day do you hear this phrase?
I have so many errands to run…it’s impossible
I need to finish all the to-dos for Christmas….it’s impossible
I have so much work to do to finish the semester….it’s impossible
I just can’t….it’s impossible

The impossibles that we find ourselves facing, we often attempt to face the impossible alone because we think it will bother others; the pressures of the impossible, they worry us, weigh us down, and feel impossible to deal with! What do you do in those situations? Where do we turn to for help when we are facing such situations? How do we cope? The answer should be simple; however, like Ahaz, we often don’t look to God as we think the task is “impossible.” However, when faced with the impossible, our answer should be simple: when faced with the impossible, or anything, we turn to Jesus because our strength is in him.

Question for Reflection:

  • When things seem impossible, what do you do to remind yourself that God is always there?

Prayer:

Dear Lord,
Thank you for all that you are and all that you have created me to be. Thank You for hearing my prayer when things feel impossible and for being my source of hope. In Jesus' name, Amen
