1 Timothy 6:6-10

But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. 1 Timothy 6:6-10 (NIV)

Oh my, the wisdom herein is extraordinary. I think I should be focused on and reading this passage daily. My husband and I retired recently. He was ready to retire much sooner than I. He is anxious to enjoy the years of our lives that we have worked for and looked forward to for so long. I was absolutely dragging my feet. I like what is familiar, change bothers me; and what if we don't have enough?! I forget that I need to let go, and let God.

There are things every day that remind me that He watches over us and if we are able to trust in His wisdom and guidance, and look away from what the world says is necessary and important, we will surely gain the fruits of our labor. I am reminded of people who, in search of wealth and all that goes with it, become mired down in what they feel is necessary to gather and maintain that wealth. They may overlook family time, prayer, camaraderie, even honesty and integrity, in their quest to obtain wealth. On the other hand, a wonderful young couple I know both ended up going to a small college neither had seriously considered early in their college planning, and in the process, found each other and began a wonderful life, faith and family centered, and filled with love and contentment. The hand of God will guide us, if we just give in and follow His way.

Questions for Reflection:

  • Have I followed the strong feelings I get when God is turning me toward truly the best thing for my life?
  • Can I put aside the need for more and fully enjoy the gifts that God has bestowed on me every day?

Prayer:

Thank you, Lord. I am so very thankful for every gift You give me. I will work to recognize the beauty of the earth and the joy around me that all come from You. Forgive me for the times I stray and forget that You know the best and that I will be fine if I simply trust in You. All glory and honor to You, Lord Jesus. Amen
