Psalm 27
It was 6:30 a.m. at the gym when I faced a small but startling reality: I had forgotten to put in my Bluetooth hearing aids. The early-morning workout crowd isn’t much for conversation, so not hearing people wasn’t the problem. My concern was my podcast.
How would I get through an hour of exercise without Mel Robbins in my ears? How would I face the day without her usual dose of inspiration?
After a bit of convincing myself I could survive, I started walking the track and eventually settled onto a stationary bike positioned in front of an east-facing window. As I pedaled, the most glorious sunrise unfolded before my eyes.
In that moment, I was reminded where my truest source of inspiration comes from—God. I spent the rest of my time on the bike in quiet prayer.
Watching the darkness slowly turn to light did more than lift my spirits; it eased my fears.
“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?” Psalm 27:1 (NRSVUE)
Two days after Easter Sunday as the alleluias fade and life returns to normal, God meets us right where we are and gives us light—even when we’re sweaty, slightly irritated, and missing our favorite podcast. God is gracious that way.
That sunrise was the reminder I needed: because Christ is risen, darkness never has the final word.
Questions for Reflection:
- Where have you seen God’s light break through the ordinary moments of your day?
Prayer:
Gracious God, You are our light and our salvation. In the busy and ordinary moments of our days, open our eyes to see your presence and your grace. Quiet our fears and turn our hearts toward you, that we may trust the promise of the risen Christ. Amen.
