Micah 6:6-8

“He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” Micah 6:8 (NRSV)

The above verse is probably the most famous and most quoted from the book of Micah. Micah is a prophet who speaks to and against the national of Israel. Warning them, teaching them, and seeking to give them hope for a new and better future following God...

Micah proclaims that God's justice is coming to create a new Israel distinct from the sin of their past and in doing so, Micah offers the people a way to be a part of it. He begins with this question, “What does God require of You?”

What part do you have to play in God’s work in restoring the world?

The answer is far from an easy one and reminds us of our need for God. We are to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with our God.

But how?

We begin the journey of God’s restorative work not with justice, but with humility. We begin the way of God’s restorative work by lowering ourselves and by coming humbly to God.

This is the way of Christ. God enters into humanity meek and humble. And from God’s entrance into humanity, he forges an upside down way of loving and leading others which ultimately leads to justice and restoration coming about through crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ.

Do you want to change the world? Do you want to bring about justice?

It begins with coming to God, humble and open to his ways of doing work in this world.

Questions for Reflection:

  • How do you struggle with being humble?
  • In what ways can you create a life of humility with God?
  • In what ways does God’s justice differ from the world's ways of justice?

Prayer

Dear Lord,
May we see the need to begin our lives connected and humble before you. Make us realize that the way of Christ is the call to give up our own priorities for the sake of others. May we daily be reminded of the calling to love you and others.
Amen.
