Psalm 118:1-2, 14-24
"Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever. Let Israel say: 'His love endures forever.'"
"The Lord is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation. Shouts of joy and victory resound in the tents of the righteous: 'The Lord’s right hand has done mighty things! The Lord’s right hand is lifted high; the Lord’s right hand has done mighty things!' I will not die but live and will proclaim what the Lord has done. The Lord has chastened me severely, but he has not given me over to death. Open for me the gates of the righteous; I will enter and give thanks to the Lord. This is the gate of the Lord through which the righteous may enter. I will give you thanks, for you answered me; you have become my salvation." "The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes. The Lord has done it this very day; let us rejoice today and be glad." Psalm 118:1-2, 14-24 (NIV)
What a day to pray over these verses. This morning the Southwood pews were filled with people of all ages honoring the remarkable life of Olivia Grieser, a life that is described in this text. Streamers waved during the processional hymn, setting the stage for a time of celebration. Although 14 of her 16 years presented many challenges, Olivia was filled with joy. The Lord was her strength. She loved unconditionally. Pastor Michael spoke of the many ways Olivia shared her faith and inspired others. She delighted in being in high school and at church taking communion, bowling, cheering, running in track, and especially being with family and friends. Her joy was contagious. Sitting near her in church and receiving an Olivia hug was a day maker. As Pastor said, “What if we all lived like Olivia, exuding immeasurable joy?” The service concluded on a very high note with an outstanding performance by Olivia’s Penguin Project friends, a performance that ended with a great rendition of “Don’t Stop Believing!” ~ the curtain call song for each Penguin Project production. Wow! Wouldn’t we all like our Celebration of Life Service to end with loud applause and cheers, “shouts of joy and victory!” ”Let us rejoice and be glad.”
As I pondered a way to summarize this text, while still reflecting on Olivia’s day, it became very clear. What the Psalmist is saying is, “Don’t Stop Believing.”
Questions for Reflection:
- Who do you know that exudes immeasurable joy?
- How does knowing that God’s love endures forever impact your daily walk with Him?
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank you for your unending love and faithfulness. In times of joy and in times of struggle, help me to be like Olivia and trust that you are my strength and salvation. Open my eyes to see the marvelous things you are doing. Teach me to rejoice in you and never stop believing. Amen.
