Ephesians 3:20

As my close friends and I are all turning the page to a new decade in life, 2026 has turned out to be a year of planning celebrations for big birthdays. As a result, I have heard on more than one occasion, “I don’t want a surprise” or, “I don't like surprises.”

I get that. It can be uncomfortable walking into a room and being completely blindsided by all the love thrown your way. It’s possible that you don’t feel worthy or deserving of all of the time, energy, and planning that went into the event on your behalf.

But sometimes, good things happen that we didn’t even know we needed or wanted and we can learn by being open to it.

Ephesians 3:20 (NIV) states: "Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us."

This scripture resonates with me deeply following a life changing trip that my son, Jack, and I took with Southwood in the Summer of 2024. Although I think of myself as an open minded person, I couldn’t help but have some preconceived notions. Concerns about travel, safety, comfort, and, of course, the food flooded my mind. Also, the more daunting, what do I have to offer on this trip? I was hoping to make a small difference, but was I even capable of that?

Having been a member of Southwood for a number of years, I assumed I knew what our mission work was about. But, until seeing things with my own eyes, I really had no idea. It’s not about building schools and medical clinics, it’s about what God can do through those who fill the halls. Children who have learned English at the new Primary school are now able to succeed in Secondary school where English is the language used to teach Math and Science.

These kids are then able to go on to become professionals, having a positive impact on the lives of others in their communities. The ripple effect from the school goes beyond anything I could have imagined.

During our trip we prayed hand in hand with the Uswaa residents in their homes and the presence of the Holy Spirit was palpable. A young man who wanted to become a physician had been bed ridden for months with a mysterious illness. With the help of Southwood, he was given an opportunity to seek the medical care that was needed to return to school. He will, indeed, become a physician and go on to help countless others.

Since our trip, Jack and I have stayed in touch with many of the Uswaa residents. We celebrate milestones together like births and graduations. We encourage each other during life’s twists and turns and we pray together.

The story doesn’t end with our effort. We are all a part of something much bigger than ourselves. Witnessing God at work exceeding many expectations was one of the best surprises of my life. God specializes in doing more than we could ever ask, we just have to let go and let Him.

  • Where might God be inviting you to step out in faith, trusting Him to do more than you can see right now?

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for working beyond what I can understand. Help me to trust You more and to step forward in obedience, even when I feel limited. Use me in ways that go beyond my expectations, and let me see Your power at work. Amen.
