Isaiah 6:8-10
Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I; send me!” And he said, “Go and say to this people: ‘Keep listening, but do not comprehend; keep looking, but do not understand.’ Make the mind of this people dull, and stop their ears, and shut their eyes, so that they may not look with their eyes and listen with their ears and comprehend with their minds and turn and be healed.” Isaiah 6:8-10 (NRSVUE)
God invited Isaiah into His work. Isaiah responded with excitement! “SEND ME!” Isaiah soon realized that God called him to preach to people who had hardened their hearts, knowing that most would reject the message. Isaiah’s mission was not to produce results but to faithfully deliver God’s word, even when doing so would be difficult. His job was to speak. The people’s response was not his responsibility.
I wonder if his excitement turned to something different. What God was asking him to do sounded difficult, lonely, unfruitful and likely would be misunderstood. Yet God had still called him. And Isaiah was still obedient. Perhaps these passages teach us that obedience matters more than visible success.
Isaiah’s world wasn’t that different from ours today. The message is the same: spiritual connectedness isn’t just magic - it must be cultivated. We must guard our hearts from becoming spiritually disconnected by noise, busyness and/or emotional overload.
Questions for Reflection:
- Where is God asking me to be faithful even when I don’t see results?
- Have I allowed any part of my heart to close or to grow numb to God’s voice?
- What “noise” in my life makes it hard to hear God’s calling clearly?
- How might God be inviting me to say, “Here I am—send me,” in a fresh way this season?
Prayer:
Lord, here I am. Quiet my heart so I can hear You. Soften anything in me that has grown numb or distracted. Give me a willing spirit, a steady heart, and the courage to follow You today. Help me notice Your nudges, trust Your voice, and walk in simple obedience. Send me where You want me, and stay close to me as I go. Amen.
