Matthew 11:28-30

“Come to me, all you who are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30 (NRSVUE)

What is a burden? The Merriam Webster definition is “something that is carried, a load.”

Each of us defines burden in our own way depending on what we might be “carrying.” A burden might be poor health – mental or physical, worries about a family member’s health, financial worries, concerns about employment, decisions – whether we have made the right decision about something, worries about our children. Burdens, they can be heavy.

Then Jesus says, “Come to me.” If you’re tired of this burden, come. Jesus promises rest. Jesus tells us, “Take my yoke upon you, and learn.”

So, what is a yoke? Merriam Webster tells us, a yoke is “a wooden bar or frame by which two draft animals (such as oxen) are joined at the heads or necks for working together.” We don’t have to carry our burden(s) alone. Jesus says, “Come. Let us share this load, I will help you.”

Remember, Jesus says, “Come.”

Questions for Reflection:

  • It sounds so easy, doesn’t it? Why do we make it so hard? What helps you to remember the promise that you can go to Jesus with your burdens?

Prayer:

Jesus,
Thank you for your promise that we can come to you with our worries and cares. Help us to accept that promise. Amen.
