Philippians 2:1-4

Therefore, if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. Philippians 2:1-4 (NIV)

In Paul’s letter to the church in Philippi, a church Paul established on one of his missionary journeys, Paul lets the Philippians know how he believes they should act and think. He tells them that since they have experienced comfort, encouragement, love, and unity as saved believers in Christ, then they should express comfort, encouragement, love, and unity to our fellow believers. Paul emphasizes that how a Christian thinks – how they frame their attitude – is crucial to living a Christian life.

Paul encourages believers to remember what they all have in common: saved by the grace of Jesus Christ. He advises the believers to let the Gospel be the basis of their unity. First, he asks them to be like-minded, having the same love, and being one in spirit and of one mind. Secondly, do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but humbly value others above ourselves. Last, he commands them to guard themselves against pride.

Early on Thursday mornings I attend a Bible study at Southwood. I really enjoy meeting with others who are studying and learning more about what it means to live life as a Christian. We don’t always come up with the answers, but we do learn from each other. The discussion helps me understand the Bible better. After the group ends for the morning, often a few of us stay and we have been trying to answer the question of what does being a Christian mean. After reading and studying these verses, I think maybe we have a good start on our answer.

Questions for Reflection:

  • Have you experienced comfort, encouragement, love, and unity as a saved believer in Christ?
  • How have you expressed those virtues to other fellow believers?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank you for the comfort, encouragement, love, and unity we experience in our relationship with you. Please lead and guide us in everyday, practical ways to express those ideals to our fellow believers. Help us to realize that with your Spirit and power, we really can be instruments of your love in this world. Amen.
