Matthew 28:16-20
Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshiped him, but they doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:16-20 (NRSVUE)
Every night, a man placed a small lantern on his front porch. It wasn’t fancy—just a warm, steady light. Other neighbors often wondered why he bothered, especially since the street already had bright lamps.
One evening, a young woman knocked on his door. “I just wanted to thank you,” she said. “I’ve been walking home from my late shift for months. Your lantern is the first light I see when I turn the corner. It helps me feel safe. It reminds me I’m almost home.”
The man smiled, surprised. “I didn’t know it mattered that much,” he said. “It does,” she replied. “More than you know.”
He had simply been faithful with a small light—never realizing how far it reached.
Just like the disciples, we may feel small or unsure. We may think our influence is limited. But Jesus sends us out with His authority and His presence, and even small acts of faithfulness can guide someone home to Him. You don’t have to shine the brightest. You just have to shine where you are.
Questions for Reflection:
- What small act of obedience or kindness might be a light for someone who feels unseen or discouraged?
- How does knowing that Jesus is with you always change the way you think about being a light to others?
Prayer:
Jesus, thank You for trusting me with Your light. Help me remember that I don’t shine by my own strength but by Your authority and Your presence. Show me the simple, everyday ways I can reflect Your love to the people around me. And remind me that wherever You send me, You are already there. Amen.
