Romans 14:1-3

“Accept the one whose faith is weak, without quarreling over disputable matters. One person’s faith allows them to eat anything, but another, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables. The one who eats everything must not treat with contempt the one who does not, and the one who does not eat everything must not judge the one who does, for God has accepted them.” Romans 14:1-3 (NIV)

In a world full of differing opinions, even in the church, it is easy to be quick to pass judgement. In this passage, the issue was food. But it could be anything; worship traditions, political viewpoints, etc. The answer remains the same: accept one another. God has accepted us without pretense. He wants us to do the same. Accept others with grace and kindness and do not pass judgement.

My employer, Lincoln Public Schools, has written their latest strategic plan that extends to 2029. It is titled All Means All Action Plan. The mission of Lincoln Public Schools is to prepare ALL students for successful careers, lifelong learning and civic engagement. The plan focuses on graduation rates, positive behaviors, and opportunity for enrollment in honors classes. We, as a staff, want everyone who walks through our doors to feel safe and welcomed and encouraged to be their very best self. But, just as in this verse, not everyone comes from the same backgrounds. The students all bring a unique set of morals and values that were taught to them at home. They also bring differing family dynamics and socioeconomic diversity. Just as God has done for us, we must do for each other. Accept ALL, include ALL, love ALL.

Questions for Reflection:

  • Have you been in a place where you did not feel accepted? How did that make you feel?
  • How can we apply the principle of mutual acceptance and understanding to our interactions with other believers in our church and beyond?

Prayer:

Lord, help me to love like you do. Teach me to accept others with grace, just as you have accepted me. Give me humility to see beyond differences and to cherish unity in Christ. Amen.
