Romans 8:1-17

Life in the Spirit

If you live your life animated by the flesh—namely, your fallen, corrupt nature—then your mind is focused on the matters of the flesh. But if you live your life animated by the Spirit—namely, God’s indwelling presence—then your focus is on the work of the Spirit. A mind focused on the flesh is doomed to death, but a mind focused on the Spirit will find full life and complete peace. Romans 8:5-6 (VOICE)

I recently returned from West Allis, Wisconsin (a suburb of Milwaukee) where I attended a concert by the Milwaukee Choristers, a 100-ish member community choir comprised of people who love to sing. They contribute their time and financial support to bring vocal music to their community. My daughter, who used to sing at Southwood, is a member of this group.

The concert, titled “Raising Our Songs – Lifting Our Voices”, was described in the welcome as “a vibrant journey through centuries of choral music, celebrating the power of the human voice to inspire, comfort, and uplift.” It included a variety of mainly religious music with a couple of spirited secular songs sprinkled in. The setting was Saint Monica Catholic Parish, a beautiful old church with murals adorning the walls and ceiling around the altar.

It was an uplifting performance, but I was especially moved by their last piece, “Beautiful Savior.” As they sang, I was contemplating the large golden crucifix on the altar behind the choir.

Beautiful Savior, Lord of the nations, Son of God and Son of man!
Glory and honor, praise, adoration,
Now and forevermore be thine.

Our bible verse today describes living a life being animated by the Spirit. The Spirit on that day came to me in the form of those many voices, “inspiring, comforting and uplifting” as the program said. I am thankful for the Choristers and all the folks who give of their time and talent to bring music into our lives.

The Spirit can come into our lives through many different avenues - scripture, worship, and prayer come immediately to mind. But I find that music, nature, fellowship and everyday activities are just as likely to provide the path. It comes down to focus. As our scripture says, “a mind focused on the Spirit will find full life and complete peace.”

Questions for Reflection:

  • What’s your Spirit led talent?
  • What activities lead you to the Spirit?

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for music that inspires and uplifts me. Help keep my focus on the work of the Spirit, wherever that inspiration comes from. Amen.
