Isaiah 55:6-7

Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake their way and the unrighteous their thoughts; let them return to the Lord, that he may have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. Isaiah 55:6-7 (NRSVUE)

How did I seek the Lord today? If He is all around me (creator of all) and in me (filled with the Holy Spirit), then He should be straightforward to find. There are some easy answers to this question:

  • Studying the Bible – writing these devotions and the research involved gives me a better understanding of God’s Word.
  • Attending Church – the music (especially when Denise and Kim play an organ/piano duet in the prelude) helps me feel the peace of God’s presence.
  • Experiencing Nature – out in Wilderness Park I marvel at the beautiful and intricate ecosystem that is God’s creation.

There are also hard answers:

  • Praying – admitting my sins and asking forgiveness.
  • Interacting with People – acknowledging every person I meet as a child of God, worthy of my attention and empathy, even if they aren’t very pleasant or don’t hold the same views that I do.

The most important part of seeking God is not where I look, but being deliberate about it. We’ve been singing a hymn in church that speaks to this.

I want to be where my feet are.
I want to breathe the life around me.
I want to listen to my heart beat right on time.
I want to be where my feet are.

God is in me and all around me if I just pay attention.

Questions for Reflection:

  • Where do you find God?
  • How do you know when you’ve made the connection?

Prayer:

Dear God, give me patience as I seek your presence. Give me peace as I seek your love. Give me grace as I seek your forgiveness. Amen.
