John 1:43-51

The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He met Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” Philip was from the town of Bethsaida, the same as Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the man that Moses wrote about in the law. The prophets wrote about him too. He is Jesus, the son of Joseph. He is from Nazareth.” But Nathanael said to Philip, “Nazareth! Can anything good come from Nazareth?” Philip answered, “Come and see.”Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said, “This man coming is a true Israelite, one you can trust. Nathanael asked, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered, “I saw you when you were under the fig tree, before Philip told you about me.” Then Nathanael said, “Teacher, you are the Son of God. You are the King of Israel.” Jesus said to him, “Do you believe this just because I said I saw you under a fig tree? You will see much greater things than that!” Then he said, “Believe me when I say that you will see the heaven open. You will see ‘angles of God going up and coming down’ on the Son of Man.” John 1:43-51 (ERV)

What stood out to me was Jesus saying, “Follow me.” I do not think that was just for Philip. That one is for Philip and the disciples. That one is for all of us. And HOW DO WE DO THAT?

A pastor asked an old farmer to say grace for a morning breakfast.

“Lord, I hate butter milk”,the farmer began. Then the farmer loudly proclaimed, “Lord, I hate lard.” With that one the pastor was growing concerned. Without missing a beat, the farmer continued, “And Lord you know I don’t care much for raw flour either.” The pastor opened his eyes and glanced around the room and saw he wasn’t the only one feeling uncomfortable.

Then the farmer added, “But Lord, when you mix them together and bake them, I do love fresh baked biscuits. So Lord, when things come up that we don’t like, when life gets hard, when we don’t understand what you are saying to us, help us to relax and wait until you are done mixing. It will probably be even better than baked biscuits. AMEN!

As followers we do need to remember life isn’t always as we would like it to be. Sometimes life is very difficult but we need to remember that down the road as followers we will have an eternity where every day will be better than the best day we spent on earth. Even better than the best biscuit we ever had.

Questions for Reflection:

  • As a follower, has life ever become difficult for you?
  • As a follower have you always believed things would work out in the end?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, Please help us to be the followers you would like us to be here on earth and help us to remember that life here on earth is not the perfect place but we do have Heaven toward it for our future. In Jesus' name we pray this. AMEN
