Exodus 16:1-15
Even if you haven’t seen “The Prince of Egypt,” you are probably familiar with the phrase “Let my people go!” - Mose’s cry to the Pharaoh of Egypt to release the Israelites from slavery.
In today’s verses, as a result of the plagues the Lord brought on Egypt, the children of Israel have been freed from slavery. The Pharaoh did indeed “let the people go” . . . until he changed his mind and rode after them with his army. They escaped the Egyptian army when God parted the Red Sea and as they continued across the desert, God performed another miracle and turned bitter water into fresh water. Now, however, the unleavened bread they brought with them from Egypt has run out. They are hungry and tired. Memories of what used to be in Egypt prompt nostalgia and they complain to Moses and Aaron. God, in God’s faithfulness, responds to the people by providing manna and quail; building a relationship based on God presence, provision and guidance.
But even more . . . God is shaping the people into the rhythm of a life of faith. In Egypt they were used to build storehouses and fill them with food. They were abused and beaten to provide for the privileged. Daily, now, they gather food together and there is enough for all to share. Except for the Sabbath. By gathering enough for two days on the sixth day of the week, they are establishing a Sabbath practice of rest. They are to stop their daily work of gathering manna and remember the God who provides for them; today and tomorrow.
A lesson for us as well. Our God still provides “food” for our journey. Worship, prayer, fellowship, learning, service . . . We too can know the rhythm of a life of faith. Six days of labor and the seventh is a day of rest. Brothers and sisters in Christ who gather and eat with us (Communion, of course, but I think donut holes count too!). Sharing with others so there is enough for all. Through these and other blessings we too experience that God is present with us, provides for us and guides us. We too are God’s people.
Questions for Reflection:
- Have you had a wilderness experience? What helped you get through it?
- Have you been God’s provision by providing God’s presence for someone else? (Don’t underestimate your ability or influence.)
- What is your best experience of Sabbath rest?
Prayer:
Thank you ever present God for your faithfulness and grace that is with us always. Open our hearts to your daily presence and guide us to see the opportunities to use what you provide us, to care for others. May we always remember that we are your people and you are our God. Amen.
