Joshua 1:8

Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Joshua 1:8 (NIV)

Joshua was a strong example of a Godly man who both believed God's Word and acted upon it. He knew the value of hearing God's word and meditating upon it. He also knew that neglecting the word of God was a formula for disaster. And like him, we too need to ponder it in our hearts and talk about it to other believers.

Many times, we misunderstand what it means “to be prosperous and successful,” which has given rise to ideas that place an emphasis on worldly prosperity and success rather than our eternal spiritual wealth.

Many feel if you are “good” you will prosper and succeed. The truth is there are no “good” people and “bad” people. We are all just people (sinners) who do both good and bad things - although some more than others on our human, very relative scale.

God may choose to bestow worldly wealth on some of his children or He may permit the alternative, but our goods and possessions of this world will pass away, and we need to be content with all things.

The bottom line is, Joshua is telling us to know the word of God, to trust the word of God, and to apply it in every circumstance of our life. Knowing and doing this, will lead to success in our Christian life.

Questions for Reflection:

  • Do you routinely keep God's words and desires in your heart and actions?
  • If not, what obstacles get in the way?
  • What action can you take to reduce or eliminate these obstacles?
  • Are you succeeding in your Christian life? If not, what can you do to enhance it?

Prayer:

Lord, help us keep your word and desires always on our mind and heart. Help us act out your word in our daily behaviors and actions. Keep us aware of our relationship with You, and give us the fortitude to strengthen this bond with prayer and appreciation. Help us act wisely, and live in a way that brings glory to Your name. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen
