1 Peter 5:6-11
Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen. 1 Peter 5:6-11 (NIV)
Can we go a hundred directions with this reading? Yep. My Nana used to tell me that temptation was everywhere and we needed to see it as the devil’s tool. She told me to resist and tell her what it was so she could destroy it. Well, that worked about 2-3 times. Then, I decided I didn’t need an adult. I had free will and I’d make my own decisions. Mistake. The part many of us forget when the devil is prowling is we have a family to turn to for help. This family may be our blood line, our friends, or church family or any believer that is willing to help. Reach out. We are never alone. I’m being somber. But it is true. If our enemy, the devil, is prowling in our minds or hearts, there is always a way out. Humility is how we cleanse ourselves and return to God who is gracious. I am now a Nana. I am trying to set an example for my grandkids. When they ask questions or want information, I feel humbled that God has given me the opportunity to voice His wishes and fight the demon.
Questions for Reflection:
- How can you consider showing humility and cast your anxiety to Christ? Do you need help?
Prayer
Almighty God, help me to embrace the Lord’s Prayer and the above verses and humble myself to you and to others. As I pray ‘Forgive us our trespasses and deliver us from evil’, help me to understand I may go through some suffering but Your will and grace will win in the end. In your name, Amen.
