Hebrews 4:14-16

“So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered Heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet He did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive His mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.” Hebrews 4:14-16 (NIV)

My first thought when I first read this passage is that with God by your side, you can walk through life with confidence. Jesus knows exactly what we are going through and understands all of our trials. Jesus has experienced all of our struggles, temptations and sufferings. And yet, he did so without succumbing to sin. For this reason, we can look to Him as our perfect example. We can rely on Him to help us through troubling times. We can come to Him as our leader. We can trust in Him as a source of help and healing. Knowing that Jesus knows what it is like to be human gives us the confidence to bring him our trials and needs.

I think back on the times that I have helped others, when I felt I was truly there for someone. I may have had a listening ear, a comforting hug or provided a meal to them. While I feel like I was doing all the right things to be helpful and understanding, I really don’t know exactly how they felt. I do not know exactly what they are going through. But we do have a perfect teacher in Jesus. He does know exactly what we need and delivers it at just the right time. He shows us grace and mercy when we do fail. “Come boldly to the throne” means to confidently trust that Jesus will listen to you and give you grace. So pray when you are content, pray when you have done something awful, pray when you are suffering, pray when you are feeling grateful. Jesus has walked in our shoes and is ready to lead us to live the life we deserve.

Questions for Reflection:

  • How does the fact that He faced the same temptations help us? What can we learn from His example?
  • How difficult is it for you to read this passage and think of Jesus as “human”? Does this give you comfort knowing that He knows what we are going through and what we need?

Prayer:

Heaven Father, we thank you for being our most supreme teacher. We confess that we often fail and fall short, but we are grateful that we can approach you with confidence knowing you will give us mercy and compassion. We ask for your grace to help us in our times of need, to strengthen us in temptation and to guide us in our daily lives. Amen.
