Proverbs 3:5-8

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight.  In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.  Do not be wise in your own eyes: fear the Lord; and turn away from evil.  It will be a healing for your flesh and a refreshment for your body. Proverbs 3:5-8 (NRSV)

I believe that one of the hardest lessons I have had to explain to my kids so far in life is with regards to blindly following someone.  The age old saying “If your friend jumps off a bridge, will you jump too?” is explained in our house a lot.  Explaining to my children that just because other people do, say, or believe something doesn’t mean that they automatically have to do so as well has been a challenge.  Enter the kids with all the questions.  “Mom, aren’t you asking us to blindly follow the Lord?”

Blindly following the Lord is something that should come so naturally to us.  We know everything that he went through to save us and yet we still question him.  Basically seeing is believing, we want to see proof that prayer and believing in him pays off.  The Lord tells us numerous times throughout the Bible that we just need to follow him.  We need to put all of our trust and faith in him and he will provide everything that we need.  Now, comes the hard part of explaining this to your kids.  Proverbs 3:5 says “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight.”

My kids and I have had plenty of conversations about putting all of our faith and trust in the Lord and blindly following him.  Explaining that once you have committed to belief in the Lord and know that no matter what happens he will be there is an amazing thing.  So many times the people we are blindly following are the people we should be questioning.  Even though it has produced many eye rolls, telling my children to simply ask “Would mom approve of this?” is the simplest way to make sure you question what you are doing.

Questions For Reflection:

  • Are you able to blindly follow the Lord without Proof?
  • How can you help the younger followers to have complete faith in what they can’t see?

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,  Help us to put all of our trust and faith in you and to follow you blindly knowing that you will always provide for us.  Help us understand that Seeing is NOT Believing when it comes to your love and blessings.  Amen
