Jeremiah 31:3-4

Long ago the Lord said to Israel: “I have loved you, my people, with an everlasting love. With unfailing love I have drawn you to myself. I will rebuild you, my virgin Israel. You will again be happy and dance merrily with your tambourines. Jeremiah 31:3-4 (NLT)

This is what God said to his people after they had repeatedly strayed away from him. Most of us have heard the stories of them not obeying his commandments, complaining about him not giving them food and water, and even worshipping other gods.

Jeremiah was a prophet to the people of Judah. By the time of this passage, they had been conquered and taken away to Babylon. Things were pretty hopeless. God had told them they would be there for 70 years, so most of them would never see their homes again.

Even though they had turned away from him, God gives them this promise. He loves them with an everlasting and unfailing love. Even in their darkest times, he is with them.

We have just celebrated Easter. How many times have we turned away from God? How many times have we doubted? Yet God still loves us – with an everlasting and unfailing love. He sent Jesus – and Jesus conquered death for us!

Let’s break out the tambourines and dance!

Questions for Reflection:

  • How do you celebrate God’s love for you? Do you ever dance for joy?

Prayer

Lord, sometimes we just take your love for granted. Remind us of how special it is and nudge us to celebrate it. Amen
