Mark 10:45

For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve and to give his life a ransom for many. Mark 10:45 (NRSVUE)

Who is your hero? I have a whole list of people! And, when I think about it, they’re all passionate about serving others. They walk on this earth not to be served but to serve and do it with such humble hearts. Like Jesus.

Surrounded by Jesus-like people at a recent community event, I was honored to accept a “Here’s to the Heroes” award for being chosen as a finalist. There were three other finalists and the winner whose stories made me feel immense gratitude by just being in their presence. I mention this award not to shine the light on me, but to shine the light on the true hero – the kind Southwood gentleman who took time out of his day to write a beautiful nomination. It brought tears to my eyes and reminded me of the power of lifting others up. It made me want to pay it forward by letting my heroes know how they’ve impacted me.

Because four of my top five Gallup strengths are in the “Influencing” category, I just love telling my volunteer stories in hopes it will inspire others to find life-changing ways to make a difference. While I’m wired to wear it on my sleeve, many of my heroes work humbly behind the scenes. What matters more is taking the time to examine your own strengths and finding ways to put them to good use. Let your story write itself through your words and/or actions in your own authentic way. And, let others know when you notice them doing the same. With Jesus as our ultimate example, may we all be heroes by creating a little more heaven on earth. (Even if election results don’t go our way. Especially then.)

Question for Reflection:

  • Did Jesus come to mind when you first answered my opening question?

Prayer:

Loving God, thank you for reminding us that it’s not all about us – it’s about using ourselves as conduits of your love as we serve others in your son Jesus’ name. Amen.

Jo loves connecting people to people, but gets even more excited connecting people to God. Joining Southwood was life-changing, so she longs for others to feel the same. Learning alongside others in a group was the best thing she and her husband ever did.

This sums it up:
  • People lover (coffee date, anyone?)
  • Inclusivity & Justice Seeker
  • Empty Nester with high-school sweetheart Steve
  • Artichoke enthusiast
  • Local restaurant & brewery enjoyer (is that a word?)
