Week Six: Law + Gospel
This week's readings are heavy on instructions, rules, and laws. But there is also promise.
We hear it in the Ten Commandments: “I am the Lord your God.” There is a place for the law, but life is found in grace and promise.
This Week's Readings: Exodus 16–31; Ephesians 4–6; Philippians 1–2; Psalms 133, 109, 90
Read, Reflect, and Discuss
This week's discussion centers on Exodus 20:1–17 and Ephesians 4:1–7.
- What are your initial reactions to these readings?
- What did you read this week that surprised you, challenged you, bothered you, or sounded like good news?
- What connections do you see between these passages?
- As the Israelites leave Egypt, they experience fear and uncertainty. Can you relate to their reaction?
- Moses reminds the people that God has fought for them, is fighting for them, and will fight for them. How does your past experience of faith and God's work give you confidence for today and tomorrow?
- “For freedom Christ has set you free.” What does it mean to be free? Apply this idea to the story of Exodus.
- We are freed in Christ through forgiveness and the gift of eternal life. Do you identify with this freedom? Is there more to it?
- What else stood out to you in these readings?
