Week Five: Freedom

This week we turn to Exodus and explore the theme of Freedom.

“For freedom Christ has set you free,” we hear in Galatians. Yet Exodus reminds us that we don't always trust freedom. Sometimes freedom scares us. What does it mean to be free? We may not fully understand it, but God delivers freedom anyway.

Oct. 11 – Worship Service

This Week's Readings: Exodus 1–15; Galatians 5–6; Ephesians 1–3; Psalms 105, 114

A Few Things to Notice

When Genesis ends, the people of Israel are welcomed in Egypt. But over time, that relationship deteriorates, and the Israelites become oppressed.

In Exodus 1–15, we encounter Israel's enslavement, Moses' call, Pharaoh's refusal to let the people go, the plagues, Passover, and finally the freedom God provides.

Galatians also emphasizes freedom: freed in Christ, our life is found in Christ. Ephesians then emphasizes unity in Christ, particularly in the early church's struggle to live together across different customs and rules.

Read, Reflect, and Discuss

This week's discussion centers on Exodus 14:10–25 and Galatians 5:1.

  1. What are your initial reactions to these readings?
  2. What surprised, challenged, bothered, or encouraged you this week?
  3. What connections do you see between Exodus and Galatians?
  4. As the Israelites leave Egypt, they suddenly wonder how much they really want freedom. Can you relate to their fear and hesitation?
  5. Moses reminds the people that God fights for them. How have your past experiences of faith and God's work in your life given you confidence for today and tomorrow?
  6. “For freedom Christ has set you free.” Is it as simple as that? What matters if you are free?
  7. What does Exodus teach us about freedom? What does Galatians teach us?
  8. We are freed in Christ through forgiveness and the gift of eternal life. Do you identify with freedom received through these gifts? Is there more to Christian freedom?
  9. What else stood out to you?
