Acts 8:26-40

Then an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Get up and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” (This is a wilderness road.) So he got up and went. Now there was an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of the Candace, the queen of the Ethiopians, in charge of her entire treasury. He had come to Jerusalem to worship and was returning home; seated in his chariot, he was reading the prophet Isaiah. Then the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over to this chariot and join it.” So Philip ran up to it and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah. He asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” He replied, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to get in and sit beside him. Now the passage of the scripture that he was reading was this: “Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter, and like a lamb silent before its shearer, so he does not open his mouth. In his humiliation justice was denied him. Who can describe his generation? For his life is taken away from the earth.” The eunuch asked Philip, “About whom, may I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else?” Then Philip began to speak, and starting with this scripture he proclaimed to him the good news about Jesus. As they were going along the road, they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water! What is to prevent me from being baptized?” He commanded the chariot to stop, and both of them, Philip and the eunuch, went down into the water, and Philip baptized him.  When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away; the eunuch saw him no more and went on his way rejoicing. But Philip found himself at Azotus, and as he was passing through the region he proclaimed the good news to all the towns until he came to Caesarea. Acts 8:26-40 (NRSVUE)

One of the most striking themes in this passage is the active role of the Holy Spirit in Philip's ministry. Philip's success was not the result of his own strategy, intelligence, or persuasive ability. It was the Holy Spirit who guided every step and empowered every word.

Philip received a clear instruction to go to the wilderness road (Acts 8:26), and then the Spirit specifically told him, "Go to that chariot and join it" (Acts 8:29). Philip could not have known that an Ethiopian official was seeking God and reading Isaiah. The Spirit saw what Philip could not see.

In the same way, the Holy Spirit guides believers today. While guidance may not always come as direct instructions, the Spirit can lead through Scripture, prayer, wisdom, godly counsel, and inner conviction. God often directs us toward people and opportunities that are part of God’s greater plan.

When Philip met the Ethiopian, he discovered that God had already been at work. The man was reading Scripture and asking questions. Philip was simply joining what God was already doing.

This is encouraging because we do not carry the responsibility of changing hearts. The Holy Spirit prepares people long before we meet them. The Holy Spirit creates spiritual hunger, awakens curiosity, and draws people toward Christ. As believers, our role is to be faithful and available. The Spirit does the deeper work that only God can accomplish.

Questions for Reflection:

  • What does the Ethiopian official's encounter with Philip teach us about the Holy Spirit's work in preparing hearts to receive God's truth?
  • In what areas of your life do you need to rely more on the Holy Spirit's power rather than your own abilities, and how might that change your response to God's calling?
  • What obstacles might prevent us from hearing or obeying the Holy Spirit's promptings today?

Prayer:

Dear God,
Help me to recognize
Your guidance in my daily life.
Give me a listening heart,
willing feet, and courage
to obey when You prompt me.
Empower me to speak about Jesus
with wisdom and love.
Remind me that You are already at work
in the lives of others,
and help me trust Your power
rather than my own abilities.
Amen.
