Genesis 29:15-28
Growing up as an only child, I was often intrigued by my friends’ sibling rivalries and family drama. Our household was pretty boring in that regard. It wasn’t until I became a teenager that it became a bit more spirited.
As we continue our “Anything but Ordinary” sermon series, we delve into stories that leave us scratching our heads. In today’s passage, we have some pretty crazy family dynamics at play. Jacob promises his Uncle Laban he’ll work seven years to marry his daughter, Rachel, only to be deceived by Laban and given her sister, Leah. Despite this, Jacob remains committed and works another seven years for Rachel. His love for Rachel wins in the end. In the midst of some disturbing cultural norms of that time, it’s comforting to know that love prevailed, thanks to Jacob’s patience and faithfulness.
Despite the differences of those biblical times and today, similarities of human nature exist. Jealously between two sisters, an uncle’s deceit and a loveless first marriage all point to the imperfect family members we can empathize with today.
When family dynamics are challenging, may we remember that God is still with us. Our trust in God can shape how we handle those relationships. We may need some boundaries or we may simply need to be more forgiving, loving or kind. In the end, we can take comfort in knowing that we’re all complex human beings with emotions that can get the best of us. But, God can bring good out of any situation. Loving God makes loving others much easier.
Question for Reflection:
- How might keeping God in the midst of your relationships make a difference?
Prayer:
Loving God, thank you for being faithful even when life doesn’t go as expected. Teach me patience and perseverance, just as Jacob showed. Amen
