John 2:1-11

We all have times in life where we feel that we have no control. The circumstances are beyond us and we need help. Too often, we struggle with situations both big and small rather than bringing them to Jesus. Jesus cares about our everyday needs, not just our spiritual needs. There is no issue too small or a problem too big for Him.

In John 2, Jesus fixed the problem at a wedding. He turned water into wine. Jesus took an ordinary occasion, a wedding, as an opportunity to act. This was the first of Jesus’ miracles, and is significant because it shows how Jesus revealed his power to the people, as well as how he brings abundance to our lives.

On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.” “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so,  and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.” What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. John 2:1-11 (NIV)

Transforming water into wine might not seem entirely life-changing, but it reminds us that anything is possible with Christ, and that God cares about even the little details of our lives. Jesus fixes us when we are broken. He forgives us when we sin or become distant from him. He calls us to obey and believe. He will meet our needs. When we listen for his voice and follow him, we become more open to His miraculous, perfect will. Sometimes, He works miracles on our behalf. Always, He is present to sustain us and to guide us. As we follow Him, our faith will be strengthened.

Questions for Reflection:

  • Has there been a time when you viewed something as a coincidence, when it may have been a small miracle?
  • Think of a time when God may have changed your “water into wine”.

Prayer:

Dear God, Thank you for always being with us. Help us to remember that you care about even the smallest details of our lives. We know that you have the power to turn our messes into miracles. As we walk with you, help us grow to be more joyful and to remember that with you, all things are possible. Amen
