John 2:13-25

How do we know when a thing has stopped serving its purpose? And, what do we do about it?

Do we discard it, only to replace it with a lesser product? Should we ignore it as long as possible? (That’s often what I do).

Sometimes, things just need to be rebuilt or fixed. A relationship that’s in disrepair, the squeaky rocking chair, or even that habit that you started for one purpose but seemed to miss the mark.

When these things fail us, break, miss the mark, we often get angry. Some of these things which break, create injustice. The broken systems, broken promises, and broken institutions that humans often create.

Jesus seems to know a thing or two about broken things. We hear in John’s gospel, Jesus’ anger and reaction to the temple being used in a way it was not meant for. He goes on to say that the temple(Jesus’s own body) will be broken and then repaired 3 days later. This, of course, foreshadows what’s to come for Jesus and reveals to those reading that there is more to the story.

That in Jesus, we see God inflesh giving of his life to the point of death for the sake of all.

That’s the good news of God’s grace. That which we thought was lost has been found. That which we thought was unredeemable has been redeemed. Those who feel unlovable are loved.

Though things will break, God is in the repair over the replace business.

And why does this matter?

  • Well, we all need help.
  • We too can be a part of God’s work in the world.
  • We all need love along the way.

Amen.

Questions for Reflection:

  • How do we react when injustice or brokenness occurs? How might our faith influence how we react?
  • Where is God’s Grace most seen in your life right now?

Prayer:

God of Grace,
Help us to see injustice and brokenness in the world. Draw us into your Grace and Love. Empower us to be sent out into the world to share your Grace and Love.
Amen.
