Matthew 5:14-16

You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. People do not light a lamp and put it under the bushel basket; rather, they put it on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:14-16 (NRSVUE)

After sneaking a sugar cube into my pocket, I’d go back upstairs where my dad would be polishing the wooden pews in our little hometown church, making sure not a scratch could be seen by the naked eye. Every Saturday morning, my dad volunteered his time to take care of the aging building with the bright red door. I tagged along for the sugar cubes. People had no idea how the church always looked so immaculate. Dad had a big heart, and was oh, so humble. So is my husband, who as I write this, is loading up hundreds of cars at a Food Bank distribution at our church. Yet, when others ask him how retirement is going, he downplays all the kind and caring things he does for others. I love his humble heart.

I’m a different story.

When I serve others, I’m excited to talk about it in hopes it might inspire just one more person to take action so lives can be changed. Our core personalities are all unique. Some of us shine our light from the rooftops and others find the dimmer switch not to call attention to ourselves. There’s no right or wrong way to shine the light of Jesus as long as our hearts are in the right place. The light is for others to witness the acts of justice that Jesus’ followers perform. And, to recognize that God is the cause of our actions - the actions illuminated by the fire in our hearts.

Question for Reflection:

  • Does your story reflect God’s story in the unique way you shine your light?

Prayer

Loving God, help us to see every day as an opportunity to shine. Not for our own sake, but for yours, so that others may see the path that leads them closer to you. Amen.

Jo loves connecting people to people, but gets even more excited connecting people to God. Joining Southwood was life-changing, so she longs for others to feel the same. Learning alongside others in a group was the best thing she and her husband ever did.

This sums it up:
  • People lover (coffee date, anyone?)
  • Inclusivity & Justice Seeker
  • Empty Nester with high-school sweetheart Steve
  • Artichoke enthusiast
  • Local restaurant & brewery enjoyer (is that a word?)
