Psalm 95:1–7
This is a noisy psalm! Twice we are told to “make a joyful noise” to the Lord. The psalm paints a picture of God's people celebrating loudly with songs of praise.
Then, at the end of verse 7, we hear an unexpected invitation:
“O that today you would listen to his voice!” (Psalm 95:7, NRSVUE)
Wait—listen? How are we supposed to listen with all that noise?
The Hebrew word for “listen” is shema. It means more than simply hearing. It means listening so deeply that we understand and respond. In Scripture, hearing and obeying go hand in hand.
Verse 7 reminds us:
“For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand.”
When we truly listen to these words, we remember that God is our Shepherd who loves and cares for us. Our response is worship, trust, and faithful living.
This is what happens in worship. God speaks words of grace and hope. We listen. Then we respond with praise, prayer, and joyful service.
The joyful noise of worship is not a distraction from listening; it is the result of listening.
This is the Good News. So today, listen for the Shepherd's voice and respond with a joyful noise!
