Galatians 6:7-9

A person’s life is created by choices. In a real sense, you determine your tomorrow by how you live today. Every decision, every action has a consequence, positive or negative. How you choose to live each day is up to you, but you also have to live with the consequences. In his letter to the Galatians, Paul reminds them that their actions are very important and those actions will determine their future.

You cannot fool God, so don't make a fool of yourself! You will harvest what you plant. If you follow your selfish desires, you will harvest destruction, but if you follow the Spirit, you will harvest eternal life. Don't get tired of helping others. You will be rewarded when the time is right, if you don't give up. Galatians 6:7-9 (CEV)

In my kitchen I have a cross-stitch picture that my grandmother made for me. The words on it say “As ye sow, so shall ye reap”. It is such a good reminder every day. The fact that we reap what we sow is good news for those who sow good habits, but a frightening thought for those caught up in ungodly activities. If we sow insincerity, hatred or anger, we will reap loneliness and dissonance. If we sow honesty, we will reap trust. If we sow love and kindness, we will reap friendship. If we sow consideration, we will reap harmony. If we sow hard work, we will reap success.

We are all given free choice but God does not want us to use that freedom to live under the power of sin. Instead we are to serve God and serve one another in love. We are to remain in God’s word, letting it shape our lives. He wants us to be free of the traps of sin that we encounter every day. Freedom from sin begins with belief in Jesus and His teachings. Through this belief, faith, and trust, we become more like the person God wants us to be. This also opens us up to sharing His love with others. God calls us to love others, to “sow” kindness and goodness. If we choose to follow Jesus, living in faith and love, we will “reap” eternal life.

Questions for Reflection:

  • When you have to make a big decision, who do you turn to for help?
  • What kind of seeds are you planting? What will your harvest look like?

Prayer

Loving God, Sometimes our free will causes us to sin. We get caught up in what the world is telling us. We get lost and need your help and your forgiveness. Help us to hear your voice and to choose to follow your lead  so that we may have eternal life. Amen

Maris McCarville - I am a retired 5th grade teacher. Although I loved being in the classroom and loved teaching, I am enjoying this new time in my life. I have been a member of Southwood since 1979! I love singing in the choir, volunteering at church and at Clinic With a Heart and really enjoy serving on a worship Care Team. Now that I am retired, I am so blessed to be able to spend more time with my family, especially my three little grandsons and my new little granddaughter.
