Matthew 13:44-46
“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it. Matthew 13:44-46 (NIV)
What is your greatest treasure? And you can’t say a person or animal. Is it a locket from your Great-Grandmother? Or a pocket watch from Grandfather?
Have you ever really thought about what makes it such an important treasure? Is it the memories? Is it the age of the item? Maybe it’s the story about how it came to be passed on?
When I think of treasures there are a few that leap to mind. Some of those coffee filter flowers (dyed of course) that my son made when he was in elementary school or the clay pot he made in middle school. But the one that I’d probably go back and rescue in a fire is the first “store bought” Christmas present he gave me – he was 4 or 5. It’s a little house that opens to show Santa and Mrs. Claus inside. It’s a “Christmas” decoration that stays out all year long. And I still smile a little every time I look at it. I’m not sure why but I think because it evokes feelings from a time when love felt simpler and life less complicated.
These verses tell us the kingdom of heaven is like the most valuable treasure we could ever have. More valuable than pearls. More valuable than the locket or pocket watch. Even more valuable than my little Christmas house.
What would you do to save your treasures? As I said, I’d run into a burning building for that little house. Which makes me wonder – what would I do to receive the most important treasure of all? What would I do (should I be doing) to enter the Kingdom of Heaven?
In the simplest of terms: all I need to do is believe Jesus Christ died for my sins.
Thanks be to God!
Questions for Reflection:
- What is the item I treasure the most? Why?
- What would I do to reclaim (save) that treasure?
- How am I living my faith (belief)?
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for sending Your son so I can have the treasure of eternity. I believe, help my unbelief. Amen.
