Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (NIV)

I just happened to open this verse assignment to begin preparing this devotional on my 15th wedding anniversary – how fitting! I definitely felt a “God moment.”

While I believe these verses refer to all our relationships, they are a guiding light toward a happy and successful marriage. Marriage isn’t always easy, but when things get tough, we cannot forget all the good times and the benefits of having someone by our side. God did not intend for us to be alone in this life. That is why he made Eve for Adam in the very beginning. So let us remember to work together, to help the other up when they fall, keep each other warm, and defend one another.

The title of this chapter in the NRSV Student Bible is “The Value of a Friend,” and the paragraph ends with going beyond one friend to say, “a cord of three is not quickly broken.” We are meant to live in community, and we are stronger together!

Questions for Reflection:

  • Do you know someone who could use a friend?
  • How can you be a friend?
  • Is there someone you have been thinking about inviting to attend a worship service or small group? What better place to find a friend(s) and be surrounded by the love of God than at church!

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, Friend of All, Creator of Heaven and Earth,
Thank you for providing us with scripture to help guide us through this life and strengthen our relationships. We have all felt lonely at some point, but thanks to your love, we know that we don’t ever have to be lonely. Please help us to share and live out your love here on earth. Help us to be a friend to all that cross our path. In your name we pray, Amen.
