Luke 17:3-4
Be on your guard! If another disciple sins, you must rebuke the offender, and if there is repentance, you must forgive. 4 And if the same person sins against you seven times a day, and turns back to you seven times and says, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive.” Luke 17:3-4 (NRSVUE)
As a person who prefers to avoid conflict, these scripture verses highlight the difficulty I would have “rebuking” another Christian. Conversely, in these times of unchecked social media, some Christians seem to have no problem calling others out online. Although Jesus was talking to those who would lead and build his church at that time, I do think Jesus was talking to all of us here today. The word “rebuke” may seem harsh, but the idea of looking out for each other seems appropriate. And in showing concern for one another, it may be that ignoring bad behaviors is not what true friendship and community is all about.
The word repentance holds not only reverence for me, but very clear memories of my childhood. I grew up Baptist and spent summers in Mississippi attending church with my grandparents. Revivals were held every summer and we looked forward to them. They were special, spiritual, energetic and emotional - lots of preaching, singing and reflection. A very public forum for getting right with God. Repentance meant walking down the aisle to the outstretched arms of the preacher and whispering my transgressions and feeling immediate relief knowing I had been forgiven. Jesus is talking about this kind of repentance and forgiveness.
I love the examples Jesus uses to make a point. He says what if a person sins against you seven times a day and repents? You must forgive him each time. That seems like a lot, but that’s the point. How many times do we sin a day and yet God is willing to forgive us. If there is repentance, then forgiveness must be ongoing and continual. Forgiveness is not limited by the number or frequency of our sins.
Questions for Reflection:
- Are you self-aware and constantly asking for forgiveness from God?
- How does it feel to know God will always forgive you?
Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you for your concern for your believers. Thank you for allowing us to repent and for your forgiveness. We are grateful for the peace this brings. Amen
