Titus 3:4-7

But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we had done, but according to his mercy through the water of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. This Spirit he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. Titus 3:4-7 (NRSVUE)

This is the time of year many are defining goals or resolutions for the new year. We have all heard common resolutions such as those related to physical appearance, food, water, time, social media, projects, money, old/new habits, etc.

Today’s scripture reminds us that the new year is not about proving ourselves or fixing everything overnight. It’s about receiving the mercy that God freely gives—not because we’ve earned it, but because He loves us. We may carry regrets from the past. We may set resolutions only to have them fade away. One thing is certain - grace meets us where we are and gently leads us forward.

Question for Reflection:

  • This year, what would it feel like to consider resolutions rooted in rebirth, renewal, or grace instead of perfection or pressure?

Prayer:

Lord of mercy and new beginnings, thank You for loving us not because of what we’ve done, but because of who You are. As we step into this new year, help us to see ourselves and others through Your eyes. Let us remember the grace You offer and let us sit with that gift in gratitude. Amen.
