Hebrews 12:28-29
"Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our 'God is a consuming fire.'" Hebrews 12:28-29 (NIV)
When my kids were little…ok, what am I kidding, they still do this; they love to build forts. They spent hours gathering the right pillows, chairs, blankets, clips, etc. until they had just the right materials to build this fort. The fort was engineered just right, rooms made, doorways created…until something or someone made that slight move and the whole thing came crashing down! Hours of hard work flattened in a moment; it’s pretty frustrating!
Lots of things in our world are like that cushion fort. They wobble, break, or fall apart. Toys break, weather ruins pool days, and even our best plans can get flattened in a second. It can be frustrating—and sometimes a little scary—when things around us change so fast.
In the above scripture, God is giving us a kingdom that can never be shaken! When everything else around us feels wobbly, God stays strong and steady.
The second verse says our "God is a consuming fire." Fire can sound scary and sometimes is, but think of it like a warm campfire on a dark, freezing night. Fire gives light, warms us up and gives us the comfort that we need. God's love burns away fear, sadness, and sin, leaving behind only what is good, pure, and strong.
Questions for Reflection:
- What is one thing in your life that feels unsteady? How did it make you feel?
- How does knowing God's love can never be shaken make you feel safer?
Prayer:
Dear God, thank You for all you are and all you have allowed me to be. Thank you for giving us a Kingdom that can never be shaken. When things around me feel wobbly or changing, help me remember that You are strong, steady, and loving. Amen.
