Philippians 2:2-3

Make my joy complete: be of the same mind, having the same love, being of full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or empty conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves. Philippians 2:2-3 (NRSVUE)

When I think of a contemporary example of humility, I am drawn to the character of Ted Lasso. He is the main character on a TV series of the same name about an American college football coach hired to coach an English soccer team by an owner who hopes he will fail. However, his “servant-leader” style and unrelenting optimism encourage success. While some of the characters use very strong language, the message is wholesome and inspirational.

One of my favorite themes from the show is “be curious, not judgmental.” Curiosity without judgment complements the humility in our Bible verses for today. For us in the church, these are the qualities of Christ, the qualities we strive for. But how do we go about attaining them? That is our challenge. Throughout the years, I have learned that being involved in missions is one of those ways.

When my husband and I were looking for a new church home for ourselves and two young children, we were interested in one that had a strong focus on both local and global missions. To us, this was a vital part of living our faith. We are grateful to have found Southwood Lutheran Church, because it met that criteria and more.

I have been privileged to participate in Food Bank distributions. It is heartwarming to hear people say, “thank you” and see their looks of appreciation. It feels good to serve others! What I did not expect was the way those our group served ministered to us. On very hot days, several people asked if I had enough water. And, on cold days, other people asked if I was warm.

Helping others makes our lives better! And it keeps us humble. We ALL need each other! What a wonderful surprise!

Questions for Reflection:

  • Think of a time when you served others. How did that affect your own life?
  • How could you serve others in your everyday life?

Prayer:

God us daily to further your Kingdom by serving others, humbly, that we may be surprised by the blessings that brings. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
