Matthew 14:28-31

Peter answered him “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat, stated walking on the water, and come toward Jesus. But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” Matthew 14:28-31 (NRSVUE)

After reading this and sitting with it for a minute, I was trying to come up with a scenario in life where I might have been a Peter. It brought me back to my childhood, learning how to ride my bike. I remember it so vividly. I was suited up with a helmet, elbow pads and knee pads. My dad held onto the back edge of my seat, pushing me forward and keeping me upright all with the strength of a single hand. I set my eyes forward on the sidewalk in front of me, confident that nothing bad could happen to me if he didn’t let go. Little did I know, he’d only stayed with me a few paces. Feeling like I was doing well, I looked over my shoulder for reassurance and when I found he was no longer there, immediate panic set in. My handlebars went wobbly as my brain spiraled into the feelings of betrayal toward my dad for letting go and the fear of an impending crash. My lack of confidence and faith in my own abilities really “petered” me out in this situation.

Peter absolutely had faith that it was Jesus calling him out on the water, but once he realized the magnitude of what he started to do, the terrible outcomes that could come from his decision to step out on the water, he panicked and began to sink. Thankfully, Jesus was there to save him. Just as my dad was there to pick me back up and help me learn not to doubt myself. It took a few more hours of practice, across a few more weeks, but I did learn how to ride that bike!

Questions for Reflection:

  • Has your mind ever betrayed your trust and confidence in what you can do?
  • How do you keep your faith alive when all you can think about are the ways you can sink?

Prayer

Dear Lord,
Remind us when our faith is feeling small that there is no doubt that you will carry us through; that we are safe to get out of the boat and follow you with confidence, no matter what lies ahead.
Amen
