Psalm 145:13

Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures through all generations. Psalm 145:13 (NRSVUE)

Imagine a house that never needed updating or maintenance. The appliances, A/C, furnace, plumbing, and garage door would always work perfectly. The roof and flooring never wear out. The kitchen cabinets, wall colors, and trim would always be in style. That would be a house worth keeping.

God's kingdom is like that house.

Almost everything we know changes. Kitchen cabinets go from oak to white to matte and handleless. What people praise, tolerate, or excuse—none of it lasts. The 1500s had their certainties. The 1950s had theirs. We have ours now, though we might speak about them with a little less certainty—even that’s a sign of the times.

God's kingdom is not like that.

It's not swayed by the whims of any age. God isn’t asking us to buy into something just to modify it later. He didn’t give us citizenship in a kingdom where trends shift every season and we need to keep up.

God’s kingdom stays the same. Redemption, forgiveness, peace, justice, humility, joy, and faithfulness don’t need revising. Love doesn’t come in and out of fashion or break down—it remains. What is good there stays good.

But just because it’s unchanging doesn't mean it's static. It’s not in a glass case, sealed and quiet—not a dusty trophy to admire from a distance. It moves—pressing in, unfolding, growing in places we wouldn’t expect.

How comforting it is to be called to belong to Jesus Christ and his kingdom. It is a shield, a shelter, a home—a pearl of great price. A house that never needs repair. A rule that doesn’t fade like earthly regimes, governments, or kitchen cabinets.

Questions for Reflection:

  • What’s something you can “sell” to show the value of the pearl of great price—God’s kingdom?
  • As an observer of yourself, what areas of your life show where the attitude of the age—or an alternative kingdom—has influence?

Prayer:

Lord, we’re fickle. Our thoughts and lives are carried along by the attitude of the age—shaped by whatever is loudest, newest, and most popular. We learn to live in the moment we’re given. Have mercy. Please place us on solid ground that doesn’t shift. We know you do. Thank you. Amen.
