John 20:30-31

I tried going this way, then that way, but couldn’t find my way. There were no signs to guide me. I woke up with a racing heart, relieved to discover it was only a dream. My recurring bad dreams take place on a college campus in a big, old building. I’m always late for a History exam - my least favorite subject. Not that that ever happened in real life, right?

Signs guide us in countless ways: restroom signs, stop signs, accessible parking signs - all helping us navigate everyday life.

Today’s scripture points to a different kind of sign: signs that point us toward Jesus. John tells us that the stories of Jesus’ miracles like turning water into wine, walking on water and raising a man from the dead were recorded to strengthen our belief that Jesus is the Son of God.

And perhaps God’s signs are still all around us. We just need to open our eyes and hearts to recognize them.

Following everyday signs can keep us safe and help us find our way. Even more reassuring, following the signs that lead us to Jesus can fill our lives with purpose, hope and unconditional love, even when we feel lost.

  • Are there stories or signs in the Bible that have strengthened your faith in Jesus? How will you participate in Southwood’s Year in the Bible project?

Prayer:

Loving God, thank you for sending us your Son, Jesus. Help us recognize and follow the signs that lead us toward a life of faith, purpose, hope and love. When we feel lost, remind us that you are always showing us the way. Amen.
